A VISIT TO MARKET DURING COVID-19 LOCKDOWN

Covid-19 is a zombie paralyzing the lives and economy of the whole world. History shows that the world has been repeatedly affected by pandemics over the past decades; these pandemics have included the “Spanish Flu” of 1918–1919, the “Asian Flu” of 1957–1958, the “Hong Kong Flu” of 1968, the novel SARS-CoV-2 virus that started to spread across the globe at the start of 2020 provides such a research opportunity.

A few days ago, I was feeling bore at home and wanted to go outside during lockdown. I thought it would be the best option to explore my city during these drastic days. I took my mask, sanitized my hands, and covered them with gloves for my own safety. First I decided to go on my bike then I thought walking through the market will help me to explore everything more closely.

As I went outside the home, the scenario was completely different and beyond my expectations. Many Policemen were on the road to implement the SOPs and law and order situation smoothly. I noticed everyone was wearing a mask. On the way to market, some hawkers were selling face masks and hand sanitizers. Due to lockdown, public transport was completely banned and people were traveling on their own vehicles. I met a young boy who told me he was hungry and needy. I gave him some money to eat something. I realized how this pandemic has affected the lives of the common masses. I thanked God for giving me everything of my need.

The market was almost closed and empty. A few people were there to purchase daily commodities of life. Only Medical stores and grocery shops were allowed to be opened. I noticed some circles outside the shops to keep the customers at a length in accordance with covid-19 SOPs. I went to a shop to buy some fruits and waited for my turn. I bought some grapes and mangoes. The shopkeeper charged me more than usual. When I asked the reason he told me that it was the effect of the pandemic resulting in price hiking. I thought if this condition remained for a long time, a poor country like Pakistan will suffer from a shortage of food. I thanked the shopkeeper and started walking through the bazaar. I purchased some other things and came back home through deserted streets. On the way, I decided that in these hard days I will help the needy with my pocket money as I witnessed a lot of hunger and unemployment during this visit. I guess morality is the only thing that leads a man to mountains.
